Poland Spring deal faces court challenge

A controversial 25-year deal between Poland Springs owner Nestle Waters and Fryeburg Water Co. is facing a court challenge from a Maine resident and Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Fryeburg resident Bruce Taylor and the Food and Water Watch group are seeking to appeal the deal in Maine Supreme Judicial Court.

The two parties are questioning the legal basis for a deal that allows Fryeburg Water Co. to sell water to Nestle and the process that led to the deal’s approval. The deal was approved by two alternative commissioners on the Maine Public Utilities Commission after the two of PUC’s regular members recused themselves because of past business dealings with Nestle.
