Poland Spring has abandoned plans to extract water from an aquifer in the Shapleigh area following unsuccessful negotiations with the state.
Poland Spring, a subsidiary of Nestle Waters North America, has removed the last of more than a dozen testing and monitoring wells from the state-owned parcel after failing to reach an agreement with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife over tapping the aquifer, Current Publishing reported. Poland Spring's plans prompted residents of Shapleigh and Newfield this winter to enact ordinances prohibiting large-scale commercial water extraction, which followed a six-month moratorium on such operations approved by Shapleigh voters in September.
The company will, however, continue to pursue a water source near Branch Brook in Wells. Residents there gathered this week to discuss a proposed water extraction ordinance that has been drafted during a moratorium on large-scale water extraction currently in effect, according to the Journal Tribune. The Board of Selectmen will resume discussion of the draft ordinance at its meeting on Tuesday.
