Just days after Continental Airlines pulled out of Bangor International Airport, news arrived that a second airline is cutting back its service to the Queen City.
Delta Air Lines, Bangor's biggest carrier with 50% of the airport's passengers, will discontinue its flights between BIA and Boston's Logan International Airport on Dec. 1, according to a BIA press release. The news comes less than a week after Continental Airlines ceased the only service it offers in Bangor, between BIA and Newark, N.J., citing financial reasons and congestion in the Newark area.
Delta claims the service to Boston is no longer profitable. During the first four months of 2009, Delta's Bangor-to-Boston flights had a load factor of 65%, a significant drop from the 80% load factor it reported on the route during the same period last year, according to the press release. Delta's service to New York City's JFK International Airport and Detroit will continue from Bangor.
Airport officials are hoping the Bangor-Boston service will be picked up by another airline, or that Delta will resume service on a seasonal basis. Delta, which recently merged with Northwest Airlines, is making cuts nationwide. The airline expects to reduce seat capacity by about 9% this fall.
What is wrong with this picture? Flights are full and airline companies are pulling out. It is time to place into law, once again, that service to smaller, rural airports be mandatory.
