Poland Spring wants faster rail service for possible Lincoln site
The Penobscot County town of Lincoln’s bid to host a $50 million bottling plant that Poland Spring wants to build somewhere in Maine could hinge on whether the region’s freight train service can improve its track speeds.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Poland Spring Senior Natural Resources Manager Thomas Brennan red-flagged the current 10 mph track speed on the Lincoln-to-Waterville track line owned by Pan-Am Railways, saying it would take nine hours at that speed for deliveries of water from Lincoln to the company’s facility in Waterville.
“That’s not favorable,” Brennan told the newspaper. “Improved rail service could play a key role in where we go.”
BDN reported that Poland Spring is working with the town and other local businesses that need rail service to see if its $50 million project could leverage investments to improve the Lincoln-to-Waterville track and boost track speeds.
