The latest Pan Atlantic SMS public opinion poll revealed that a growing number of Mainers identify jobs and unemployment as the top issue facing the state.
The Maine Public Broadcasting Network reported that 36.2% of 400 respondents identified jobs and unemployment as their top concern for Maine. The next-highest priority was the accessibility and cost of health care.
The latest poll also looked at the upcoming gubernatorial race and other political issues before the state. It found that Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mike Michaud held a slight 1.3% lead over incumbent Republican Gov. Paul LePage. Michaud was preferred by 37.3% of voters polled while LePage received 36% support; 18.3% of respondents said they would support independent Eliot Cutler.
The poll also found a slight uptick in optimism about the economy, with the highest number of respondents saying they felt the state has been headed in the “right direction” since 2006. A total of 38.9% of people felt the state was on track.
