Legislators begin crafting supplemental budget

Lawmakers have started crafting a supplemental budget to account for spending adjustments like the $20 million the state lost in federal funding for the Riverview Psychiatric Hospital in Augusta.

The Associated Press reported the budget-writing process started Tuesday with the Legislature’s appropriations committee requesting budget information from state agencies and departments.

Typically, supplemental budgets originate in the governor’s office, but Gov. Paul LePage said he won’t try to fix the budget the Legislature passed by overriding his veto. Democratic Rep. Peggy Rotundo, co-chair of the appropriations committee, told the AP she’s still hopeful the governor will take part in the process of writing a supplemental budget.

Adrienne Bennett, a spokeswoman for the governor, told the AP that LePage says he did participate in the process by proposing an initial budget with structural changes like cutting revenue sharing with municipalities, an idea that was turned down.
