Poll: L.L.Bean among most reputable companies

A leading market research firm has named Freeport-based retailer L.L.Bean as one of the top 10 U.S. companies with the highest corporate reputation in a recent poll.

L.L.Bean announced Tuesday that it was ranked No. 7 for highest corporate reputation out of the nation’s 100 most visible companies by the Harris Poll Reputation Quotient study, which surveyed more than 27,000 people across the country.

The retailer’s reputation quotient score was 80.78, placing it above Lakeland, Fla.-based Publix Supermarkets, Apple Computer and Google. It was only a few decimal points behind Kraft Foods and Johnson & Johnson. Reputation quotient scores above 80 are considered “excellent.”

“These results speak to the impressive amount of brand affinity we have fostered, as well as the importance we place on our customers, employees, communities and the natural environment,” L.L.Bean President and CEO Chris McCormick said in a prepared statement. “It reflects many years of hard work and commitment from our employees to serve the customer, our communities and support one another as a team. Being listed and recognized as one of the most reputable companies in the country is quite an honor.”

L.L.Bean also scored high with the study’s “100 Opinion Elites,” a sub-segment of the survey’s respondents who are considered to be “more informed, engaged and likely to act based on corporate conduct and other … factors.” In that sub-section of the survey, L.L.Bean was ranked No. 3 for highest corporate reputation, just behind Amazon and Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans Food Markets.

This was the first year L.L.Bean appeared on Harris Poll’s most visible companies list.
