Poll: Mainers doubt speedy recovery

The number of Mainers who believe the state is headed in the right direction is growing, though three-quarters say the state won't see economic relief for at least another year, according to a new poll from Pan Atlantic SMS Group.

In its November Omnibus Poll, the Portland-based group found that 39% of Mainers think the state is headed in the right direction, an improvement of 9 percentage points since May 2011. However, 44% said the state is headed in the wrong direction. The number of people who think the state will emerge from the economic recession in 2012 fell from 18% in May to 13% in November. Three in four Mainers believe the state will recover sometime after 2012. Of those who responded to the survey, 42.5% have a favorable opinion of Gov. Paul LePage, while 52% reported an unfavorable opinion. His favorability level has risen since October 2010.

Pan Atlantic SMS Group polled 400 Maine residents between Nov. 9 and Nov. 22.
