Poll: Mainers support environmental regs

Mainers are generally opposed to certain proposals aimed at rolling back environmental regulations, including efforts to change shoreland zoning, the state's bottle bill and the uniform building code, a new poll shows.

According to a survey conducted two weeks ago by Portland-based Critical Insights, a majority of Maine voters oppose legislative proposals that could negatively impact the environment. The poll, commissioned by the Natural Resources Council of Maine, found that more than 80% of those surveyed supported the Land for Maine's Future program, increased public investments in energy efficiency and banning the chemical BPA. The majority of respondents also supported the state's Uniform Building and Energy Code, which was enacted last year but is targeted in this legislative session for repeal. And 70% of respondents opposed repealing the state's bottle bill or changing zoning to allow more construction closer to the shoreline.

Critical Insights surveyed 402 voters in the state. The survey has a margin of error of 4.1 percentage points.
