Pollock limit hike to help ME fishermen

The U.S. Commerce Department has decided to raise Northeast pollock catch limits from 6 million pounds to 36 million pounds per year, a move that will help Maine groundfishermen.

The increase is based on new scientific data that shows raising commercial catch limits won't harm stock rebuilding efforts, according to a press release from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. In a press release, U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree said the decision will allow the region to "show that we can sustainably manage fish stocks while protecting fishermen and their families."

Pingree and other members of New England's congressional delegation urged Commerce Secretary Gary Locke to order NOAA to raise the pollock catch limits.
