Retail sales see boost in May

Retail sales for May rose 2% over the same month last year, according to data from the Maine State Planning Office.

Total taxable retail sales in all categories increased over May 2009, with the largest jumps in lodging and auto and transportation, which both rose 3.6%. Total retail sales for the month were $1.33 billion, compared with last May's total of $1.17 billion.

Year to date, retail sales are 3.4% higher than the same period last year, and sales in all categories are stronger than 2009's year-to-date totals, according to the SPO.
