Pols give early nod to weight-limit exemption for ME highways

A U.S. Senate subcommittee gave initial approval yesterday to a pilot project that would exempt Maine highways from federal truck-weight limits.

Championed by Sen. Susan Collins, the measure is intended to keep freight trucks on the highway system and off secondary roads, reported the Bangor Daily News. The U.S. Department of Transportation notified Maine in 1994 that it was in violation of federal truck weight requirements. As a result, trucks weighing 80,000 pounds or more have since been diverted off I-95 in Augusta and onto secondary roads.

The pilot project is intended to assess highway safety and wear-and-tear, as well as impact on the states' commerce. The measure was approved by the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and needs approval from the full Senate Appropriations Committee and, eventually, the full Senate, the Daily News reported.
