A veteran of the retail automotive business and a former restaurant owner, Louis Rylant of Bedford, N.H., has purchased the Sea Basket Restaurant in Wiscasset for an undisclosed price.
"My family and I love Maine and all the unique local places you can discover,” he said in a news release announcing the purchase. “The Sea Basket had that charm that both locals and tourists could appreciate. I knew it would be a success immediately," said Rylant.
The restaurant, which has been serving Maine seafood since the early 1980s, is located on Route 1 in Wiscasset. Its menu includes award-winning fried clams, lobster stew, homemade chowder, cole slaw and onion rings.
The restaurant recently was awarded "Best of the Best" for Midcoast Maine's Best Seafood Restaurant by Market Surveys of America.
Rylant said the kitchen has been newly updated with a state-of-the art convection frying system, which makes for crispier coatings of fried fish and other fried foods. A new outdoor seating area has been added and Rylant plans to make additional upgrades in the coming months.
The staff remains the same and Rylant can be found there on his day off from his other job as General Manager of Jaffarian Toyota in Haverhill, MA.
“The Sea Basket is something I plan on having in my family for a very long time,” Rylant said. “It's truly a special place."
