Avelo Airlines, headquartered in Houston, said this week will add a route from Portland International Jetport to Tweed-New Haven Airport in southern Connecticut.

The route is Avelo’s first entry into Maine, according to a news release.

Avelo will be the only airline offering nonstop service between Maine and southern Connecticut. One-way fares are expected to start at $39.

Avelo said it will begin to operate a twice-weekly route on May 22, using a Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft.

Tweed-New Haven Airport is located on Connecticut's coast and is a gateway to 15 towns that make up greater New Haven.

“This new service will provide easy access between New Haven and Portland making it very easy to connect with family and friends this coming summer,” said Paul Bradbury, the director of Portland’s airport.

Avelo is led by its founder, Andrew Levy. Established in April 2021, it has flown more than 6 million customers on over 46,000 flights and serves 54 cities spanning 24 states and Puerto Rico, as well as Jamaica, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

The Portland-to-New Haven service is one of five new routes — four from New Haven and one from Hartford, Conn. — that Avelo announced this week.

New Haven, the second-largest city in Connecticut, is Avelo’s largest base, employing nearly 300 crew members supporting nine aircraft. Last month, Avelo passed the three-year mark of service at Tweed-New Haven.
