Portland board OKs wharf renovation, rock gym

Portland planners have approved an expansion and renovation of the city’s Maine Wharf as well as construction of a 13,000-square-foot rock-climbing gym on Warren Avenue.

The Portland Press Herald reported the city’s Planning Board approved both plans Wednesday. Developer Pat Tinsman, who presented the wharf expansion plan, said he has spoken with people interested in opening a fish market and seafood restaurant there but he could not secure leases for that tenant until a renovation plan was approved. That plan involves rebuilding and adding two stories to a 9,000-square-foot building near Commercial Street.

Planners also approved the expansion of the Concord, N.H.-based Evolution Rock and Fitness to a parcel at 65 Warren Ave. The company announced earlier this week that it will partner with the Maine Rock Gym in the new venture that will include a 40-foot-tall climbing wall.
