Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud is expected to announce the formal start of his run for governor in 2014 during an appearance today at the Franco-American Heritage Center in Lewiston.
The Portland Press Herald reported Michaud’s campaign staff confirmed the announcement Wednesday, in advance of the candidate’s Lewiston stop. Michaud began fundraising for the race since launching an exploratory committee earlier this summer, joining likely independent candidate Eliot Cutler and Republican incumbent Paul LePage in raising money for the race.

Michaud may face a primary challenge from Steve Woods, a Yarmouth town councilor who ran for U.S. Senate as an independent in 2012 but says he’s running as a Democrat in 2014. Independent candidates who’ve also announced their intention to run for governor in 2014 include independents Lee Schultheis of Freeport and Adam Eldridge of Brewer, and Green Independent candidate David Slagger.
