Portland boutique hotel gets OK

A plan to turn the former Portland Press Herald building, built in 1923, into a boutique hotel and restaurant received approval Wednesday from the city's historic preservation board to move ahead.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the hotel project — called "The Exchange" — will now take its request for historic preservation tax credits to the Maine Historic Preservation Comission and the National Park Service.

The project, expected to be finished by the middle of 2014, is expected to include 110 rooms and an 80-seat restaurant.

The building, at 390 Congress St., was sold by MaineToday Media in 2010 to John Cacoulidis after the paper moved into a space in One City Center.

The project is the second in four months to get approval from city planners, who approved another 123-room downtown hotel project in November.
