The Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce and its member businesses have begun bringing meals to some of the local workers on the front lines of the pandemic — employees at Mercy Hospital and Maine Medical Center.

The mission is to help take care of essential workers working to keep the Portland area safe under extremely difficult and exhausting circumstances, according to a news release.

Bernstein Shur is partnering with local restaurant El Rayo, to deliver Mexican cuisine.

"We are thrilled to provide a little support and, most importantly, a thank-you to the heroic staff at Maine Med and Mercy Hospital,” the restaurant’s owner, Tod Dana, said in the release.

Bernstein Shur CEO Joan Fortin said the firm wants to offer comfort amidst the latest pandemic surge.

“For nearly two years now, our heroic health care workers have been putting themselves at risk to save lives in the ongoing battle against COVID-19,” said Fortin. “We at Bernstein Shur feel honored to show up for them with hot local meals as a symbol of our gratitude for their service, sacrifice and courage.”

MEMIC committed to giving 100 meals per week over the next two months.

“MEMIC’s focus as a company is on the wellbeing of the workforce, and a healthy workforce includes being appreciated as well as being well-fed,” said Senior Vice President of External Affairs Tony Payne. “The work of everyone in health care, from the front desk and housekeeping to the ICUs is important.”

Hannaford said it will donate Hannaford gift cards.

“Medical professionals have been doing so much, for so long, to care for their patients and our community,” said Eric Blom, the supermarket chain’s director of external communications and community relations. “They have been selfless throughout the pandemic, setting aside their own needs, day after day.”

cPort Credit Union said it will assist with the food drive by partnering with a local sports bar, Rivalries, to bring lunches to both Maine Med and Mercy over the next couple of weeks.

“We recognize the incredible work health care workers have provided to keep our communities healthy and safe,” said cPort CEO Gene Ardito.

Other businesses or organizations are invited to join the initiative. Contact Tommy Johnson at tjohnson@portlandregion.com or 207-772-2811 ext. 226.
