Portland chamber backs TABOR II

The Portland Regional Chamber today announced its support of the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, a referendum which will appear on the November ballot.

The chamber held an "All Boards" meeting, including representatives from the regional board and its five community chambers, to vote on the Portland Regional Chamber's position on TABOR II. The vote to support TABOR II was over 60%, according to a press release from the chamber. The result is "consistent with the organization's long-standing history of supporting broad tax reform and relief, and limiting the growth of government spending at all levels of government," CEO Godfrey Wood said in the release.

TABOR II limits increases state spending to the rate of inflation plus population growth and would limit municipal and county spending to the increase in personal income growth, capped at 2.7%, plus the growth of new taxed property. The Maine State Chamber initially supported the measure, then withdrew its support in late September.
