Innovation, creativity and determination were the buzz words that many of Maine's leading high-technology company officials echoed when they accepted their 2010 TechMaine Awards on Thursday at the Eastland Park Hotel in Portland.

Entrepreneurs and more established Portland region firms were honored at the seventh annual ceremony for helping to put Maine's high-tech sector on the map and creating high-paying jobs.

After he accepted the Governor's Award for Technology Company of the Year, Josh Broder, president of Tilson Technology Management in Portland, said it was a testament to his company's hard work to not only succeed, but to help Maine improve its high-tech infrastructure.

"Our company has grown by 120% in the last six months," he said. His team continues to work on projects that include building 1,100 miles of fiber optic cable to extend broadband as well as logistics to help troops in Iraq and Afghanistan receive the food and supplies they need.

CashStar, also of Portland, took home the Gazelle Company of the Year, which is awarded to a company that has gone from being a startup to become a solid player in the high-tech arena. The gift card company serves 56 retailers, including Home Depot, Staples and CVS.

Ocean Renewable Power Co. of Portland took home the award for New Technology of the Year for its 60-kilowatt tidal power generator in Eastport.

Joe Kumiszcza, executive director for Technology Association of Maine in Westbrook, noted they had more nominations this year than they had in the past two years combined.
