Portland City Council is considering whether to impose a six-month moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries in the city.
City Attorney Gary Wood told the Portland Press Herald a temporary ban would give city officials more time to write rules for operating and siting a dispensary as other communities have done since voters approved a statewide referendum last November to create a system to dispense medical marijuana. A public hearing scheduled for June 21 is expected to generate opposition from patient advocates, according to the paper.
Meanwhile, Luke Sirois, owner of Western Maine Electrical and Excavation in Farmington, told the Kennebec Journal he hopes to open four of the first eight marijuana dispensaries permitted under state law. Sirois told the newspaper he has spent $10,000 on legal advice and building plans to create four dispensaries, and has already received approval to operate dispensaries in Farmingdale and Wilton.
The state Department of Health and Human Services will announce its dispensary selections on July 9.
