The Portland Food Co-op has exceeded its 2,500-member, year-end goal, just a few weeks after officially opening its doors in early December.
General Manager Kevin Gadsby told WCSH6-TV that the co-op has been able to hire more people as a result of exceeding the membership goal. He told Mainebiz in mid-November that membership was already exceeding expectations as the number nudged toward 2,100.
“Fortunately, because things have been going so well, again, we were able to hire additional staff members and that really increases efficiency in a lot of ways," Gadsby told the news station. "And I think come spring, if things keep going the way they have been, we'll be looking to hire again, which is great, because we're providing local jobs as well.”
Maine's number of member-owned food co-ops is set to almost double to 11 this year, driven by the increasing popularity of locally produced food, as Mainebiz reported in its March 10 issue.
