Portland GDP lags among metro areas

Although the Portland metropolitan area has relatively little wage inequality between its top and bottom earners, it falls short in economic production compared to 100 top metro areas in the country, according to a new Brookings Institution report.

The MetroPolicy report ranked the Portland metro area, which includes the city, its suburbs and communities south to Biddeford, 68th out of 100 for its 7.8% gross domestic product growth per job from 2001 to 2005. Portland's GDP per job in 2005 was $80,584, compared to the $96,655 average for the 100 largest metro areas.

But the Portland area's 5-to-1 ratio between the highest and lowest wage-earners was the eighth best for income equality ratio. The report also ranked metro areas based on education and sustainable growth. Read the report here."
