Plum Creek foes suggest new plan

Maine Audubon and the Natural Resources Council of Maine made a pitch yesterday to prevent Plum Creek Timber Company from building a resort and subdivision on the Lily Bay peninsula.

The two groups appealed to state land use regulators yesterday, arguing that the Lily Bay peninsula on the eastern side of Moosehead Lake is a valuable recreation area and wildlife habitat to the endangered Canada lynx. They suggested that Plum Creek instead be compensated with permission to develop 33,500 acres on the other side of the lake now targeted for conservation, the Portland Press Herald reported.

Plum Creek's plan for the Moosehead Lake region includes 975 house lots and two large resorts. The project also would conserve more than 400,000 acres of land.
