Portland International Jetport adds Frontier Airlines service to Tampa

A month after announcing the addition of flights connecting Portland International Jetport with Miami and with Minneapolis/St. Paul, the Jetport on Tuesday said that Frontier Airlines will launch nonstop service to and from Tampa, Fla.

The flights begin April 13 and will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays until May 11, according to a news release. The low-cost airline currently offers nonstop Portland-Florida service via Orlando and Fort Myers.

“These additional flights to Florida are a sign that as Mainers are completing their vaccination cycles they are looking to travel,” Airport Director Paul Bradbury said in the release. “Frontier has added these additional flights at peak times to allow many Mainers to take a trip to Florida before summer arrives.”

In February, the Jetport announced that American Airlines will expand its Saturday service to Miami starting on June 5, while Delta Air Lines will offer daily flights to Minneapolis/St. Paul, starting on May 28.

American, which had originally intended to operate the Miami service just for the winter season, will now fly the route year-round. The airline is currently the largest carrier at the Jetport with nonstop service to seven destinations, while the Minnesota service will be Delta's fifth nonstop destination from the Jetport.

The new itineraries come despite the fact that most airlines continue to see a slump in demand because of the pandemic. The International Air Travel Association recently estimated that the industry had $118 billion in losses during 2020 and a 66% slump in demand compared to 2019.
