A $75 million expansion of the Portland International Jetport terminal has been completed and is now in service.
Officials held a ribbon-cutting Friday to mark the opening of the 140,000-square-foot expansion, and service there began Sunday morning, according to the Bangor Daily News. The new space, under construction since May 2010, includes new departure gates, security screening checkpoints, a bridge connecting the terminal with parking and a new food court, where 30 employees have been hired. The project was largely paid for by a $61.5 million bond, which the jetport will pay back through passenger fees and terminal rent. Another $9.1 million in stimulus money and $4.4 million from the jetport also funded the project.
Airport officials previously said they hoped the expanded terminal would attract at least one new carrier. Southwest Airlines is expected to begin serving Portland next spring following its merger with AirTran Airways, which currently operates out of PWM.
