Portland, Lewiston score near top in national ranking of best US cities for job-seekers

Unemployment rates in Maine and most of the country are subsiding a bit after hitting record highs at the start of the pandemic, and some places are now better job-seeking spots than others.

Maine’s two largest cities rank among the 30 best, according to a new analysis by financial website WalletHub.

Portland ranks No. 11 and Lewiston is No. 28 in the study of more than 180 U.S. cities. Released last week, it examined 32 key indicators of job-market strength, from job opportunities to employment growth to monthly average starting salaries.

The salary data was one of a dozen socio-economic indicators that were considered. They also included factors such as safety and family-friendliness. The remaining 20 criteria focus on hiring markets.

Portland was No. 40 in a separate ranking of the hiring markets, but nearly at the top — No. 3 — when it came to socio-economic indicators. Lewiston placed No. 45 and No. 17 on those two scales, respectively.

Overall, the top-ranking city in New England was also the No. 1 city in the country: South Burlington, Vt. No other New England city ranked higher than Portland. There were some contenders, however. Also in the top 30 were Nashua, N.H., No. 14, and Manchester, N.H., No. 22.

Other cities that typically score high in such comparisons were absent from the higher tiers. Burlington, Vt., ranked No. 64, while Boston was No. 118.

Hialeah, Fla., scored as the worst city for job seekers, at No. 182.
