Portland Metro bus looks to expand service northward
Greater Portland Transit District officials are considering using a federal grant program aimed at reducing air pollution and traffic to expand bus service to Cumberland, Freeport and Yarmouth, according to the Portland Press Herald.
The bus district, known as Metro, presented a service-expansion proposal to a joint meeting this week of officials from Portland-area municipalities. Metro has not yet determined how many routes will be added or where, spokeswoman Denise Beck told the paper, saying the project is still in its early stages.
The most likely new routes would be along Interstate 295/Route 1, she told the paper, including a commuter route extending from Portland to Freeport.
Freeport Town Planner Donna Larson told the paper that town officials have been talking for years about bus service to Portland, and the Metro proposal is the closest it has come to being a reality.
The plan is to apply for a federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant that would fund 80% of a two- to three-year pilot program for expanded service. The other 20% would come from local sources, Metro told the paper.
