Despite a concession by its developer to remove two floors from a controversial condo development, Portland’s City Council voted unanimously for a 60-day moratorium on development surrounding East End public parks.
As previously reported, a preliminarily-planned 155 Sheridan St. condo development has been met with resistance by many residents for several months, as the originally planned building would have risen above the lip of Fort Sumner Park, blocking a popular vista of the city, Mount Washington and the Back Cove.
District 1 City Councilor Belinda Ray proposed a moratorium on development in October in response to the outcry.
The moratorium, which was approved on Monday night, will expire on Feb. 6, according to the Portland Press Herald.
“Taking this small pause in a small area will allow us to get ahead so we can be proactive going forward,” said Ray at the City Council meeting, the Press Herald reported.
