Portland officials mull affordable housing rule
The city of Portland has proposed a new ordinance that would require new residential developments with 10 or more units to set aside a certain amount of units for affordable housing.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the proposal, which was discussed by a Portland CIty Council committee Wednesday, would require 10% of a development’s units to be affordable for households with a certain median income. Median income, in this case, would be considered up to $75,000 for a family of four.
Chris O’Neil, the Portland Community Chamber’s government liaison, said the business and development community are "leery" of the concept. He said a chamber task force is developing a “suite of incentives” that would, for instance, get rid of parking space requirements.
