The Portland City Council has approved an increase of the city’s minimum wage to $10.10 an hour, effective the beginning of next year.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the city council on Monday voted 6-3 in favor of the increase after a nearly two-hour debate. After increasing from $7.50 an hour to $10.10 next year, the city’s minimum wage will increase to $10.68 in 2017. Then, starting in July 2018, the minimum wage will increase at the same rate as the Consumer Price Index.
The city council’s finance committee had proposed a smaller annual increase in the minimum wage, but councilors ultimately decided to go with the larger increases, a proposal that was first made by Mayor Michael Brennan and then revived by Councilor Jon Hinck.
