The past three months have seen a spate of thefts or attempted thefts of catalytic converters from vehicles, Portland police report.
F. Heath Gorham, the interim chief of police, said in a news release Wednesday that police are investigating incidents that happened between Feb. 11 and April 11.
In that period, there were 12 reported thefts or attempted thefts. In each case, thieves were going after the vehicle’s catalytic converter.
Most owners reported that the incidents happened when vehicles were left unattended for several days. The majority of the thefts occurred in parking lots that were not well lit or protected by security cameras.
Thieves are targeting larger box trucks, commercial trucks and vans and hybrid vehicles.
Police reported a similar rash of thefts in May 2021.
The converters, which reduce auto emissions, contain precious metals that can be resold.
