As summer job locations, Portland ranks among the top 10 while Lewiston is at No. 49 in a new National ranking published by personal finance website WalletHub.
The site puts Maine's largest city at No. 7 out of 180 U.S. markets measured across 21 key indicators of employment outlook, affordability and "downtime-friendliness."
Researchers looked at a range of data from the median income of part-time workers to the availability of summer jobs to the commuter-friendliness of summer jobs to come up with the rankings.
At No. 7, Portland is sandwiched between Columbia, Md. (No. 6), and Pearl City, Hawaii (No. 8).
Orlando, Fla., topped the list, followed by Scottsdale, Ariz. (No. 2), and Juneau, Alaska (No. 3).
Despite high housing prices in Portland, the city scored better for social environment and affordability than for its youth job market.
Lewiston was the only other Maine city on the list, but received a higher grade for its youth job market than for social environment and affordability.
At No. 182, Jackson, Miss., came in dead last.
For Portland, the spotlight marks the latest in a string of Top 10 spotlights. Earlier this month, the city was was ranked No. 8 on U.S. News & World Report's lineup of "Best Places to Live" in 2022/23.
Commenting on WalletHub’s summer job barometer, Nate Wildes, executive director of Live + Work in Maine, notes that "a summer internship in Maine offers a unique opportunity to see the way life should be, while dipping your toe into various fields of work available to you full-time.”
“Maine employers know that one of their competitive advantages in attracting interns is to leverage Maine's summer season and the world-class quality of life that comes with it,” he added. “An excellent internship will surely include opportunities to take advantage of that.”
