Portland-Yarmouth ferry deal not final

Contrary to a September announcement, Nova Scotia’s new leaders said Wednesday that a deal to restart ferry service between the province and Maine is not complete.

The Portland Press Herald reported that incoming Premier Stephen McNeil, who won an Oct. 8 election, told CTV News that the province has no completed agreement with the prospective operator, the Maine-based venture called STM Quest.

Last month, Nova Scotia’s economic development minister told The Associated Press that the province had struck a deal with STM Quest to restart ferry service in May 2014.

McNeil said his government will continue to pursue a deal with the Maine-based company. If that should fail, he said the province will pursue an agreement with other operators.

The paper also reported that STM Quest has not secured an agreement with Singapore Technologies Marine, the owner of the vessel it plans to use for the service.
