Power out for nearly 100,000

A relentless ice storm that coated some parts of Maine with an inch of ice has caused power outages across the state due to downed lines.

According to a 4 a.m. press release from Bangor Hydro, about 30,000 customers lost power in northern and eastern Maine, while Central Maine Power Co. reported about 80,000 had lost power as of Monday evening.

According to Bangor Hydro spokesman Bob Potts, the weight of the ice broke some poles and split others from the top down, exacerbating repairs. Service is expected to be restored by mid-day Friday.

The crystallized landscape evoked memories of the Ice Storm of '98 for many electricity customers and repair crews. John Carroll, a spokesman for CMP, told the Portland Press Herald that Sunday's storm cut a 40-mile swath through its service area in central Maine, where 31,000 customers were without power. By comparison, in the Ice Storm of '98, 275,000 CMP customers lost power.

Weather forecasts are calling for below-freezing temperatures for Christmas Day.
