Pratt & Whitney cements place in N. Berwick

Pratt & Whitney inked a new 10-year lease for its plant in North Berwick where it has manufactured aircraft engine parts since 1979.

The lease renewal is good news, coming on the heels of a 5% reduction in force enacted earlier this year by Pratt & Whitney's parent company, United Technologies. The local work force has shrunk from 1,650 to 1,300, according to the Portland Press Herald.

The company expects demand for two engines over the next few years - one for the military, the other for commercial aircraft - will boost production and limit further lay-offs, Pete Borgel, the plant's general manager, told the paper.
