Pratt & Whitney is planning to add more than 200 workers at its North Berwick jet-engine manufacturing facility in coming years.
The Connecticut-based company will increase its work force from 1,286 to its pre-recession level of 1,500 by 2015, according to Foster's Daily Democrat. The company plans to start by rehiring 10 employees laid off during the recession, General Manager Peter Borgel told the paper. However, federal support for a military engine that rivals Pratt & Whitney's product could pose an obstacle to the company's growth. Lawmakers have approved nearly $3 billion for an F-35 engine made by General Electric and Rolls-Royce, and the U.S. House last month approved another $485 million. The North Berwick facility could see work decrease if the military ultimately chooses the GE engine over Pratt & Whitney's engine, Borgel told the paper.
Pratt & Whitney, which also makes commercial jet engines, last year extended its lease in North Berwick for another 10 years. The company contributes $300 million to the local economy, according to Borgel.
