Presque Isle hospital to switch to CNG
The Aroostook Medical Center has broken ground on a project to convert to compressed natural gas heating, with hopes that the move will save up to $500,000 yearly.
One hospital official told the Bangor Daily News the organization expects that converting from No. 2 heating oil to compressed natural gas will pay off its $300,000 investment within one year. By comparison, a conversion to biomass for heating would cost $5 million and take about five years to see a return on the investment.
The conversion project will link the hospital with a CNG compression station under construction in Baileyville, the newspaper reported, with deliveries handled by the Boston-based company, Xpress Natural Gas. That company will be the first in Maine to haul CNG for heating use, the newspaper reported.
