A strip mall that would include a restaurant, retail and office space has been proposed for a prominent site off Exit 127 of Interstate 95 in Waterville that once was the site of The Silent Woman restaurant.
The 470 Kennedy Memorial Drive lot, which more recently housed a Weathervane restaurant and a car wash, is owned by Marden’s Surplus and Salvage. The lot is at the northwest corner of Marden’s parking lot at one of the major entrances to the city.
Representatives of Wentworth Partners & Associates Inc. of Skowhegan and Marden’s presented plans for the 28,654-square-foot strip mall to the Waterville Planning Board Monday night, the Morning Sentinel reported.
The plan still must undergo planning and site plan review and sewage and road work would be necessary, developers said. They said that construction could begin soon after approval if an anchor tenant signs on.
The Silent Woman restaurant, its sign featuring a headless woman, sat on the site next to I-95 for decades, until it closed in the early 1980s. The Weathervane moved into that location in 1986, but closed in January 2015. The Lucien’s Car Wash site was most recently used a lot for selling Christmas trees. The car wash site was bought by Marden’s owners John and Ham Marden several years ago, and they bought the Weathervane site after the restaurant closed.
So "The silent woman" was silenced in the early 1980's? No wonder I stopped seeing advertisements for the place in The New Yorker magazine. I'd thought they had just stopped advertising in The New Yorker. Silly me! (Silence is golden.)
