Proposed funding for Navy destroyer reduced

Funding for a future Navy destroyer that could be built at Bath Iron Works is proposed to be cut by $150 million.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the proposed $150 million cut would come from a $400 million budget line for a new destroyer. It’s part of $5 billion in proposed reductions to the National Defense Authorization Act to meet spending levels in the budget passed by Congress last week, the paper reported.

The original $400 million in funding that was proposed to go to a future Arleigh Burke-class destroyer was added at the request of U.S. Sen. Angus King.

The Navy has yet to decide if BIW would receive the destroyer contract, but King said in a statement to the paper that he was pleased that the defense bill still contained $250 million for a potential destroyer.
