Proposed Sanford gravel pit causes consternation

A proposal in Sanford by R. Pepin & Sons to operate a mineral extraction operation on land owned by John Rivard, with transportation to occur along Bernier Road to New Dam Road and beyond, is a cause of consternation for Bernier Road residents, who are worried about noise, dust and truck traffic, the Journal Tribune reported.

According to the company’s website, R. Pepin & Sons has operated for over 70 years, currently delivering throughout southern Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, with products that range from basic ready-mix concrete to a range of offerings in the landscaping and hardscaping business.

Pepin’s would not be the first gravel pit on Bernier Road, but if it’s approved as proposed, it would be the first to use the rural roadway as the route to get the product to Route 4 and its ultimate destinations, the paper reported.

“Tailgates slamming, crushing and screening – I would hear it,” David Houle, long-time co-owner of a nearby campground, told the paper.

In the summer, Bernier Road is filled with joggers, elderly walkers, dogs, parents pushing baby carriages and kids on bicycles, Charles Kasinowicz of Revere, Mass., recently retired and plans to move full-time to his seasonal home near the proposed gravel pit, he told the paper.
