The Maine Center for Public Health is relocating from Augusta to the University of Southern Maine in Portland to be more closely associated with a research and training institution.
Professor Andy Coburn, the director of the Institute for Health Policy at the Muskie School, says the move will "strengthen the public health institute's capacity to support population health improvement through enhanced access to public health education and training, research and evaluation, and technical assistance," according to a press release. The move will also build on the University of Southern Maine's collaboration with the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
The 12-year-old Maine Center for Public Health is one of more than a dozen state-level institutes around the country that works to improve public health. It is affiliated with the National Network of Public Health Institutes.
Shawn Yardley, chair of the center's board, says the move to USM will increase the stability of the center and preserve its mission, "something that has become hard to achieve as a small, stand-alone nonprofit entity," according to the release. Together, the center and Muskie School will create a network of public and private organizations to support Maine's goal of becoming the healthiest state in the nation, the release says.
