PUC may weigh FairPoint deal today

The Maine Public Utilities Commission will hold a public hearing today on a revised proposal from FairPoint Communications to buy Verizon's 1.6 million landlines in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

FairPoint, based in North Carolina, and Verizon worked out a settlement agreement with the PUC staff, which previously said the deal should be stopped, and Maine's public advocate. However, the unions representing Verizon employees still oppose the proposed deal.

The PUC could begin deliberations on the sale today following the hearing, or the matter could be rescheduled for a later date.
