PUC probes price hikes for commercial users

The state's utilities regulators are looking into why businesses conserving electricity are seeing their bills go up.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission yesterday launched an investigation to find out why some commercial customers are seeing increases in their electricity costs despite efforts to use less, according to a release from the PUC. The commission plans to poll Central Maine Power Co., Bangor Hydro-Electric and Maine Public Service to find out how many customers have reported the problem and what solutions could be.

One possible reason for price increases, despite conservation, is the difference of price based on the size of the commercial customer. A medium-sized customer that reduces its energy use enough to fall into the small class could see rates increase, since smaller users are charged more, according to the release.
