Grant to boost research cyber network

A $1.73 million grant will help expand the state's fiber optic network for research and education institutions.

The stimulus grant from the National Center for Research Resources will fund a new high-speed connection from Bangor to the University of Maine at Presque Isle and complete a connection from Portland to Ellsworth, according to a press release from the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory in Bar Harbor, the grant recipient. The funds will support the Maine IDeA Network for Biomedical Research Excellence, a network of 12 laboratories, universities and colleges led by the MDI lab created in 2001. The network, known as INBRE, in May received an $18 million federal grant to fund training and create 96 new jobs.

The new fiber optic connections will position Maine to connect with Canada's research and education network, and will boost Internet connectivity for other users in northern and coastal Maine, according to the release. Construction is expected to take two years.
