A staff report by the Maine Public Utilities Commission has recommended against a proposed contract between the owner of Poland Spring and a privately held water utility in Fryeburg.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the nonbinding recommendation, written by PUC hearing examiner Matthew Kaply, said Fryeburg Water Co. was meant to “convey to the village of Fryeburg a supply of water for domestic and other uses,” but not for sale as a bulk commodity to Nestlé Waters North America.
Bruce McGlauflin, an attorney representing several people who oppose the contract, told the newspaper that the recommendation could possibly stymie Nestlé Waters’ current contract with the Fryeburg utility.
The final decision on the proposed contract will be left to PUC commissioners, who will be represented by alternates because the three regular commissioners all have conflicts of interest due to past business dealings with Nestlé Waters.
