PUC staff says no to GridSolar 'smart grid' bid

The Maine Public Utilities Commission’s staff is recommending against Portland-based GridSolar LLC’s bid to become the state’s smart grid operator.

The Bangor Daily News reported that PUC staff said in an examiner’s report that the commission should instead seek proposals to develop solutions for transmission and distribution issues in Maine’s electric grid with new technology, otherwise known as non-transmission alternatives.

GridSolar has said that it can provide solutions for transmission or distribution issues with its “smart grid” approach for less than the cost of new power line and infrastructure construction. The company has been running a pilot program in Boothbay, and it’s seeking to start similar projects near Portland, Waterville, the Lakes Region and the Midcoast.
