Quick thaw could boost flood risk
The Maine River Flow Advisory Commission said this year’s flood season will be delayed and could be more dangerous than usual as additional precipitation through March is expected to add to an already heavy snowpack.
The Bangor Daily News reported the commission expects that the snowpack won’t diminish much until early April, when a quick thaw could lead to flooding, particularly in areas where ice jams formed in January. The commission reported that heavy precipitation early this year already created significant ice jams in the St. John River upstream from Fort Kent, the East Branch of the Penobscot River downstream of Grindstone, the Penobscot River near Winn, the Piscataquis River upstream of Howland and the Kenduskeag Stream in Bangor.
