Quimby buys northern sporting camps

Conservationist Roxanne Quimby has bought a 13.8-acre wilderness sporting facility in northern Maine near Stacyville.

Quimby on Friday bought Lunksoos Camps, which consists of a lodge and four cabins on the east branch of the Penobscot River, for an undisclosed amount, according to the Bangor Daily News. The camp will be used for recreational, artistic and scientific activities, according to Quimby's foundation, Elliotsville Plantation Inc. Mark Leathers, her forestry consultant, told the paper it will serve as a retreat for writers and artists, and sportsmen will still have access to a snowmobile trail and boat launch. However, hunting could be discontinued, he told the paper.

Lunksoos Camps was built in 1881 and is across the river from the 70,000 acres Quimby already owns and hopes to turn into a national park, according to the paper.
