Raceway manager suspends purses

The manager of a stock car race track in Unity says he can no longer afford to pay purse money.

George Fernald Jr., who is in the fifth and last year of his lease agreement with Unity Raceway owners Ralph and Nancy Nason, told the Bangor Daily News he can no longer pay weekly purses of $5,000-$6,000 because he has operational losses of about $30,000. Fernald told the paper most of the debt can be attributed to poor attendance and low car counts.

He said he will continue to award trophies to the top three finishers in each racing class and drastically lower admission prices to keep the races going through the final 13 race dates in the season.
